Yanya Boston | Drums

I was born in Holland as my mother was living in Europe at the time, but moved to Adelaide at the age of 5 months.
I was lucky in that for as long as I can remember I've always wanted to play music. This has made my life decisions very easy as I've always simply chosen the path that leads me toward music.

INSPIRATION
My mother has always supported me in my quest to pursue music. I think simply allowing me to play drums in my inner city house was support enough. She knew what to expect though as my dad was a professional drummer in Paris, though I'm sure she would have been much happier had I played just the triangle.

WHY DRUMS!!
I think every boy at some age decides they want to play drums. I was fortunate in that I seemed to have a natural ability for it so I guess it just stuck. Mum used to take me to African concerts when I was very young and Id find myself sitting onstage watching the drummer.

TOURING!!
I enjoy touring a lot. I enjoy rolling into a place I've never been to before and leaving an impression on people thru music. Its not as glossy and flash as most people would think. It often means needing to be up by 6am only to drive for 7 hours straight then check in to a new hotel, rush to set up and sound check, play a concert for 2 hours, pack down, then back to the hotel to be in bed by 3am only start the whole process again at 6am!

HIGHLIGHTS SO FAR!!
I cant really put my finger on only a few as there are so many. The opportunity travel around the world playing music is certainly a highlight.

SCARY GIG!
My first ever performance in front of people was at a school concert. About 4 hours prior to the show someone slammed my hand in a class room door bursting almost every blood vessel in my hand, causing to swell up and look more like a foot then a hand. My first general public performance was in a club called Nexus in Adelaide. I was 15 and had been invited to watch a friends African band play and perhaps play some hand percussion with them, shakers, bongos, that kind of thing… anyways, as it happens, something happened to their drummer and they asked me to play. Id never heard the songs, barely knew the names of the other musicians, and there I was playing with a professional band.

My scariest performance was probably my first… the school concert. My hand was extremely swollen and bandaged, I was in a lot of pain, and I was on some kind of painkillers…. Not to mention the general nerves that go along with a first ever-public performance. If I remember rightly, it was supposed to something like a 15 minute set…. Think I got through all the songs in about 8 mins flat I was so nervous!

If I wasn’t a musician Id be involved in something in the arts I'm sure. Back in the early days I had dreams of playing professional volleyball, but due to my music commitments and the fact that I stopped growing at 6 foot, it was never gonna happen.

When I am 70? I cant even think past next year!
